Atlantic Highly Migratory Species Advisory Panel Meeting September 10-11, 2014

The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) intends to hold a meeting of the Atlantic Highly Migratory Species (HMS) Advisory Panel (AP) on September 10-11, 2014, at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel, 8120 Wisconsin Avenue, Bethesda, MD 20814. The HMS AP meeting and webinar will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 10; and from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 11, 2014.

Participants are strongly encouraged to log/dial in fifteen minutes prior to the meeting. NMFS will show the presentations via webinar and allow public comment during identified times on the agenda.

The intent of this meeting is to consider alternatives for the conservation and management of all Atlantic tunas, swordfish, billfish, and shark fisheries. We anticipate discussing comments on the Predraft for Amendment 6 to the 2006 Consolidated HMS Fishery Management Plan (FMP) on the future of the shark fishery, providing updates on Amendment 5b on dusky shark management, discussing the proposed rule for Amendment 9 on smoothhound shark management, and reviewing the Final Environmental Impact Statement for Final Amendment 7 on bluefin tuna management measures.

The meeting will also include progress updates on the National Recreational Policy, implementation of 2013 ICCAT recommendations, the Atlantic HMS Management-Based Research Priorities document, the HMS compendium/management history, and electronic monitoring and electronic reporting opportunities for Atlantic HMS fisheries.
