MSSA forms Youth Angler Club

The MSSA Youth Angler Club is building upon the MSSA’s long history of protecting and preserving the rights, traditions, and future of recreational anglers. MSSA believes educating our youth is a critical part of this mission, hence the creation of the MSSA Youth Angler Club.

The MSSA Youth Angler Club is free and open to the general public, youth ages 6-16.
The Youth Fishing Seminar Series is designed to engage youth anglers interested in learning about fishing techniques, methods, biology, conservation, and more. The seminars are open to the public and will be held at Ake’s Marine on Sunset Avenue in West Ocean City, and at various locations through the area as there will be several field trips and events.

Seminar Series Schedule:
April 15 – Knots/ Casting- Conventional Dropping/ Lure Board and Various Terminal Tackle.
Hosted by Atlantic Chapter Members and Ake employees Ake’s Marine 6:30 PM- 8:00PM

May 20 – Fish Handling Techniques – Explaining & showing Baits – Tools Equipment & Methods. Hosted by Atlantic Chapter Members and Ake employees Ake’s Marine 6:30PM - 8:00 PM

June 17 – Fish Science, Conservation & Biology – Boater & Water Safety.
Hosted by MD. Coastal Bays Foundation & OC Coast Guard Aux. Ake’s Marine 6:30PM – 8:00PM

June 21 optional Teach a Kid to Fish. Hosted by Ocean Pines Anglers & Atlantic Chapter Members - at Ocean Pines South Pond

July 19 – Fishing Contest Registration 8:30 AM - 9:30 AM Contest 9:00AM – 10:30AM.

August 19 – Crabbing: Showing & explaining several ways to crab and equipment needed.

*For a child to participate they must attend several classes

November 11 – SHARKS! 101. Hosted by: Local Shark Expert Capt. Mark Sampson & Atlantic Chapter Members

REGISTERED MEMBERS WILL BE NOTIFIED OF ANY CHANGES!
To be able to participate in field trips you must attend at least two classes.

Youth Angler of the Year Rules & Regulations:
1.    Fish must be legal size to enter or at least 6” if there is no minimum size (applies to both released and kept fish).
2.   Only one fish per species may be entered per day.
3.   Entry must be submitted within three days of catch.
4.   Entry must be emailed to yay@mssa.net with: picture of youth holding fish, name, age
Date, location, species, kept or released. If MD. citation, official documentation must be submitted once received.
5.   Youth must be between 6 and 16 years of age.
6.   Rules & regulations are subject to change
7.   Points: 10 pts-Catch and/ or release; 20pts-MD. citation (email scanned paperwork)
20pts-Attend Youth Seminar Series; 500pts state record (DNR certified) 1,000pts- world record (IGFA certified)

MSSA has 14 chapters statewide, including one in Pennsylvania that are committed to providing fishing activities for our youth and their families. Providing these opportunities is critical to protecting the future of Sportfishing.
